What is EMDR therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) is specifically developed to reduce the negative impact of traumatic memories.

EMDR has been researched extensively and has proven to be effective for the treatment of PTSD, trauma, panic attacks, anxiety, eating disorders, and many other distresses.

EMDR can treat many types of mental distress and may produce faster results than traditional talk therapy.

What makes EMDR therapy unique?

The goal of EMDR is to help you process difficult information and experiences in a different way. Each session aims to impart you with positive emotions, deeper understanding, and a healthier outlook, supporting your journey towards healing and growth.

All of our EMDR clinicians are trained under a certified EMDRIA-approved program.

Our counselors will help you heal and address any negative reactions to your environment that are affecting your life.

Will EMDR therapy re-trigger your trauma?

It’s completely natural to feel hesitant about starting trauma therapy, especially if you’re worried it might mean reliving the worst moments of your life. But EMDR therapy works differently.

Instead of confronting trauma head-on or talking through it in detail for long periods, EMDR takes a more structured and manageable approach. Sessions are carefully guided by your EMDR therapist, who will help you move at a pace that feels safe and comfortable

Unlike some other therapies, EMDR does not require you to intensely relive traumatic memories. While moments of emotional intensity can arise, they are usually brief and decrease quickly. If distress doesn’t ease on its own, your EMDR therapist will have techniques to help calm you and restore balance.

Are there side-effects with EMDR therapy?

EMDR can stir up emotions during and after a session. Some clients report feeling emotionally tired, having vivid dreams, or noticing a temporary increase in sensitivity to others and their environment. These are normal signs that your brain is actively processing.

Some people may also experience unexpected physical or emotional responses in session, or find that new memories or feelings surface between sessions. Your therapist will help you prepare for these experiences with grounding tools and coping strategies, like creating a “safe place” visualization, to help you stay centered and supported throughout the process.

EMDR trauma therapy has been extensively researched and is considered one of the most effective treatments for PTSDand  trauma. It isn’t magic—but it works. For many people, the benefits far outweigh the temporary discomfort. And the relief you find can be lasting.
