What you can expect in DBT® therapy for adults?

As a client of our Adult DBT® program with Austin DBT Associates, you will gain an array of skills to manage your emotions, and you’ll learn constructive ways to deal with impulsive behaviors that often accompany strong emotions.

Unlike many other DBT® programs, Austin DBT Associates is comprehensive (fully adherent). This means that as a participant in our Adult DBT® therapy, you will benefit from all the aspects of DBT® that make it effective: individual therapy, skills training, and a therapist consultation team. You will also have access to your clinician for phone coaching outside of sessions to help you practice and apply your skills.

“I’ve been going to Austin DBT for less than a year, but it has had a huge positive impact on my life – from individual therapy, the most communicative and understanding psychiatrist, and group classes for further skill development. Austin DBT helped turn my life around from a downward spiral, and their layers of therapy helped in a way I think individual therapy alone would not have worked.”

Overview of our Adult DBT® program

Our Adult DBT® Program focuses on helping you learn skills and apply them to your daily life:

  • Individual therapy occurs weekly with a highly-trained therapist.
  • You will keep track of a diary card to record your moods and behaviors.
  • You will participate in Adult DBT® Skills Classes, to learn and refine skills for daily coping.
  • In addition to weekly therapy, skills generalization is also available during phone coaching. Phone coaching is a component to the comprehensive DBT® program in which you have opportunity to contact your therapist.

Option: Low Cost Individual Counseling

Austin DBT Associates also offers Low-Cost Counseling, provided by our compassionate graduate student clinical interns. These interns are supervised by our in-house, fully licensed clinicians, so it’s like getting two therapists for half the price!

Our Low-Cost Counseling is only $70 per session.

Just as with regular DBT therapy for adults, the Low Cost Counseling program with our clinical interns involves weekly sessions.  You will find caring support and learn key skills to help you grow and thrive.

We also offer affordable Adult DBT® Skills Classes

At Austin DBT Associates, we offer affordable, supportive group classes to teach skills in mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and effective communication. These Adult DBT® Skills Classes are part of our fully adherent DBT therapy, but can also be a stand-alone service.  We also offer this service to adults who are seeing clinicians from other practices.  Whether you’re dealing with a serious mental health challenge or just looking to add new skills, our classes can guide you toward becoming your best self.

We also offer specialized DBT® Skills Classes for adults struggling with perfectionism.

What to expect in our Adult DBT® program

A 90-minute intake assessment is conducted by a licensed DBT® clinician.  During this time, the clinician will assess your history, needs, and goals in order to identify the best course of treatment for you. You will learn more about the DBT® treatment modality and what to expect, so you can determine whether DBT® is a good fit for you.

The average initial intake assessment fee is $150.  Low-Cost Counseling, provided by graduate student interns, is $70 per session.

Once you’ve completed the intake assessment (and are oriented to a group skills class, if that’s a part of your treatment plan), you will begin recurring sessions.  Individual sessions can be weekly, every other week, or once a month – the frequency is determined by the clinician once a treatment plan is in place.  Sessions last 50 minutes. Group sessions last 90 minutes.
